Spring Break

We are now entering the season of Spring Break. Schools take off for a week. Parents may or ay not vacation. And some do staycations. There is so much that begins with the iconic Spring Break. I know many of you have your ideas.

As a parent of older adult children (they are in their early 20’s and I am 48). I am at the stay home and not really vacationing or do much these days. I live vicariously through everyone else. I have done my share of fun and traveling. I do however have a bucket list of traveling I would love to do but my health issues and financial costs get in the way. I love to dream and I dram BIG!

So when my girls were young I sometimes was just happy not having to run around getting them to school and their many activities. All families need a break, hint in the “spring break” part. But that really does not happen. Some children’s sports and activities are year round. UGH! I know right!! Children need a break too! Some families can afford to get away with their kids and some cannot. So hopefully this season you can find inexpensive and free activities to do.

Stay at home ideas:

*spring cleaning at home *binge watching *go downtown (like Chicago where I live) to the museums *movies *miniature golf *cook a meal together (shop for it together first) *family game night *sometimes not having anything planned for the first time in a long time is a vacation in itself *read a book together

What I want to share is that you can basically do anything. You can find a way that is cost effective. If you look around your house I bet you can find something to do with your time off. You can do just about anything during a weekend off or holiday off. I know there are many people all alone out there too so try not to feel dampened on these holiday’s and break times. Trust me I truly understand just because I have family does not mean I get to have holiday’s with them. I know you may need a little push to find something to do when you feel “bored” or “lonely”. Well, try reading a book, clean out a closet, binge watch a show, crochet or knit, start a blog. There is so much out there you can do and I am here to tell you to enjoy this “Spring Break”.

Spring Is Coming

Happy weekend to my fellow bloggers and newbies reading this. I am really looking forward to Spring in 2019! I live in Galena, Illinois. In the Midwest of the States. Spring is something we really only get bits and bouts of. It sometimes seems we get a few seasons in one day or a week. That is the running joke.

What about where you live in the world where I consider this Springtime now, how is it generally by you? Please share below so we can all learn about one another.

The one thing about Spring that is exciting is the beautiful sunshine flowers growing, yards changing, seeing children out with families, sports activities happening again. It kind of gets rid of the “winter blues”. I am not saying it heals S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder); that is a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons. It generally starts and ends at the same time each year. It begins in the fall and goes through the winter months. I encourage you if you feel you have this or it in lingering more than winter go see your family physician. Mayo Clinic is a great resource, as well as NAMI. Please do not let depression get in your way. I do have references on my page.

But what I am trying to tell you is that we have something to look forward to, something beautiful outside! Today I just got excited that the sun was out and shining high in the sky. It may not be in the high temps but I am grateful for at least this. These are the “little things” that give me joy and I will take it. I hope you find your joy as we are nearing Spring in 2019.

What gives you joy upon Springtime? Please share below so we can learn about one another across the globe.

Winter Blues

It is the end of February and thus begins the long month of March 31 days. Yes February is quite a short month but we cringe in the Midwest waiting for Spring. So what can we do to get by, entertain ourselves and relax?

I have been hit by how life passes us by, so I try to enjoy it. Yes I know it is winter time. So I look at planning activities even if they are at home. I know finances, health and work can be a factor. So you can jot it down in your calendar. I have mentioned in previous blogs and probably will again I am a sucker for calendars, journals, notebooks, pens, pencils, all kinds of colors, even writing in different colors. I would color categorize my plans in my day planner.

First organize your priorities such as work hours, school, children activities. The first things you need to do make it easier to schedule something fun!

  • prioritize your household and family responsibilities first
  • church, sporting events, groups, coaching
  • doctor appointments, parent/teacher appointments, job interviews

I think you all get the gist of it. Local Churches always have events, great way to get back to church and getting to know those around your surrounding neighborhoods. Your local hospital may have classes on health and fitness for you to join. Local Park Districts and YMCA’s host a wide variety for many interests. I know money can be a factor. Check out your local Public Library. There are book clubs at many of them. These are great ways to get out in your community, get to know others, and help those winter blues. You can also set up a day to binge watch on Netflix, Hulu, and/or Amazon Prime. Then you can blog about a series. You can download Kindle and sign up with Amazon to get Kindle Unlimited. There is a WIDE variety of books you can get for free (there are monthly fees of course).

This is just a little something for fun today. I am having one of those afternoons. In March a HUGE majority of people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. A little tidbit of information that on March 2, 1904 Dr. Seuss was born. As a child I read those books and read them to my children as well. When I worked in the Early Childhood field we had a great time celebrating his birthday. Generally students in America are off for Spring Break. Either plan your vacations on or around that. Occasionally over here in Illinois we get some “sneak peeks” of spring coming and it is rather helpful. I encourage you to enjoy the sunshine as it comes.
